What the book is about

Darwin begins with a familiar observation: humans can produce striking changes in domesticated plants and animals by selecting which individuals reproduce. He then asks what might happen in nature when organisms vary, more offspring are produced than can survive, and some variations help their possessors reproduce more successfully. Across many generations, advantageous traits can become more common. Darwin calls this process natural selection. He supports the argument through examples from breeding, geographic distribution, fossils, classification, embryology, and the similarities among related organisms. He openly addresses difficulties and gaps in the evidence available in his time, including the incompleteness of the fossil record. The book's larger claim is that species are not fixed creations but populations with histories, branching from common ancestors over immense spans of time.
