Mindfulness for Beginners: Start Where You Are

Mindfulness begins with noticing. You do not need to become a different person before you start. You only need one honest moment of attention.

The Practice

  1. Sit comfortably or stand quietly.
  2. Notice one breath without changing it.
  3. Feel your feet, hands, or the contact with the chair.
  4. Name one thing you can hear.
  5. Name one thing you can feel in the body.
  6. When the mind wanders, simply say: “thinking.”
  7. Return to the breath or the body.

This is enough. Mindfulness is not a performance. It is the practice of returning to the present moment with less judgment.
