Self-development without the guru act.

I have been interested in self-development most of my life partly because I needed it. I knew I had a temper. I knew there were things in myself I wanted to change. Over the years I explored meditation, the Silva Method, visualization, Reiki, breathing, psychology, gratitude, and plenty of ideas that sounded better in books than they worked in real life.

My rule is simple: I try things, keep what works, and discard the nonsense.

Why this remains on a book site

Reading and self-development were never separate for me.

Books gave me many of the ideas I later tested in my own life. Retirement gave me more time to read again — especially through Audible — and more time to look back at what actually helped through fear, anger, uncertainty, reinvention, relationships, career changes, and aging.

This section is not a claim that I have life figured out. It is where I share the useful parts of that continuing experiment.

Small, Honest Ways to Change Your Life When Motivation Doesn't Show Up. This book grew from the same idea behind these pages: useful change does not require a dramatic reinvention. It begins by noticing what is happening, making the next step small enough to take, beginning before you feel perfectly ready, and returning when you drift away.

It combines practical ideas with stories from my own life — procrastination, meditation, anger, relationships, money, starting over, asking for help, and learning to appreciate what is already good.
