A Boy's Trip Across the Plains tells the story of Guy Loring, a determined boy who embarks on a long emigrant journey with his mother and the Harwood family from a Missouri village toward California in 1855. After the death of Mr. Loring and the loss of their wealth, Mrs. Loring struggles to support herself and her son through sewing and running a small school, but illness forces her to seek a change of climate. Guy proposes his mother as a nurse to Mrs. Harwood, who agrees to take her along on the wagon train.

The narrative begins with the preparations and departure of the emigrant train, describing the daily tasks Guy undertakes—driving oxen, fetching water, and running messages—while navigating the social dynamics of the group, including teasing from George Harwood and friendship with Aggie. Early on, Guy faces fears of Indian attacks and wilderness dangers, even disguising himself to protect Aggie. The journey crosses the Missouri River and the vast prairie, where Guy experiences isolation and hardship, including a night lost and injured on the plains before being rescued.

The group encounters Pawnee Indians, leading to tense but peaceful negotiations. Life on the trail is marked by moments of wonder, such as Guy's storytelling around the campfire and the sharing of Native American legends, as well as tragedy, including the death of Mrs. Harwood's baby. Guy's youthful impulsiveness leads to a dangerous gun incident and a panther attack, after which he feels remorse and works to regain trust.

Further challenges include natural hazards like poisonous alkali and a sudden Indian attack on the camp, where Guy bravely saves lives and earns a gun as a reward. The party’s crossing of the Rocky Mountains brings difficulties but also awe-inspiring landscapes. Guy narrowly escapes injury during a buffalo hunt, and the group passes near the Mormon city by the Great Salt Lake without stopping.

As they near California, Guy faces uncertainty about his future and his mother’s care. Offers of work and companionship come from fellow travelers, but his devotion to his mother leads him to stay with the Harwoods, who promise support. The journey culminates in a prayer meeting and the separation of the emigrant train.

Settling on adjoining farms, the families adjust to pioneer life in small mud dwellings. Guy works hard for Mr. Harwood and becomes a playfellow and guide to the children. He shares imaginative stories, including a legend about the 'Enchanted Yellow Men,' which teaches lessons about pride, idleness, and the importance of helping others. Despite moments of weariness, Guy finds contentment in his mother’s happiness and the community around him. The story closes with a sense of hope, moral reflection, and a touch of whimsy as a bird sings a farewell to Guy.
