Adventures of a Young Naturalist follows a scientific expedition through Mexico in 1864, narrated through the eyes of a young boy named Lucien, affectionately called 'Sunbeam.' At just nine years old, Lucien insists on joining his father's party, which includes the Swiss naturalist Sumichrast, the skilled Mistec Indian servant l'Encuerado, and their loyal greyhound, Gringalet. The journey begins in Orizava, moving through sugar-cane plantations where Lucien learns about cultivation and sugar production, and continues upward through steep mountains and dense forests. Along the way, Lucien faces physical challenges—fatigue, soreness, and minor injuries—but his curiosity and courage shine as he shoots his first squirrel and learns to use a small fowling-piece under supervision.

The group builds shelters, marks trails, and hunts various animals including squirrels, armadillos, pheasants, and wild rabbits. They observe an array of wildlife: from giant trees and insects like Carabus beetles and centipedes to birds such as toucans, kingfishers, and hummingbirds. Lucien experiences moments of wonder, such as seeing hoar-frost for the first time and marveling at panoramic views of volcanoes.
