What the book is about

2 min read

Alien Minds follows George Hanlon, a Terran secret serviceman with extraordinary mental abilities, as he undertakes a covert mission on the planet Estrella. Estrella’s people are humanoid but possess alien mental processes and a culture deeply rooted in the sacred number five, with advanced social ethics but primitive technology. The Federation of Planets aims to integrate Estrella, but local resistance and a shadowy criminal network complicate matters.

Hanlon arrives disguised as a native, adopting the cover of an animal trainer to get close to Ino Yandor, a theatrical impresario suspected of leading criminal activities. Using his rare power to read surface thoughts and control animal minds, Hanlon trains native wild dogs called roches and later a black Earth cat named Ebony to spy and communicate. His investigations reveal a criminal hierarchy involving Yandor, a gangster named Ran Auldin, and a mysterious masked man who turns out to be Adwal Irad, the planet’s Second-In-Line and a key opponent of Federation membership.

As Hanlon delves deeper, he faces physical danger, including capture, mental torture, and assassination attempts. He discovers that Irad is manipulated by an alien mind seeking control over Estrella, adding a cosmic dimension to the political intrigue. Hanlon’s mental powers extend to healing, demonstrated when he accelerates recovery of his wounded father, Admiral Newton, a fellow secret serviceman recently freed from captivity.

Hanlon’s mission leads him to gain the trust of the Ruler, Elus Amir, by saving him from a staged runaway horse incident and working as a stableman. Through careful observation and evidence gathering, Hanlon exposes the conspiracy opposing Federation membership. After thwarting an assassination attempt on the Ruler by Irad, Hanlon and his allies secure Estrella’s decision to join the Federation.

Throughout, Hanlon grapples with the challenge of understanding alien minds that differ fundamentally from human thought, the limits and ethics of his mental powers, and the tension between cultural respect and political necessity. The story blends espionage, political drama, and science fiction elements, highlighting the complexity of alien societies and the delicate process of interstellar alliance-building.
