As Lad matures into a massive, graceful dog with a striking orange-mahogany coat, he earns privileges and respect, even amid human conflicts like a mad-dog scare and trespassing visitors. Lad’s protective nature shines when he defends the Mistress from a mad dog and confronts trespassers who disrespect the Place.

Lad’s life is marked by companionship and trials. The arrival of Lady, another collie, introduces complex family dynamics.
