Rip Van Winkle is a good-natured but lazy man living in a quiet village at the foot of the Kaatskill mountains. One autumn day, Rip goes squirrel shooting in the mountains and encounters a mysterious old man dressed in antique Dutch clothes carrying a keg of liquor. Rip helps carry the keg to a mountain amphitheatre where silent, odd-looking men play ninepins. After drinking some of the liquor, Rip falls into a deep sleep.
When Rip awakens, he finds himself alone, with a long beard and rusty gun, and returns to his village only to discover it drastically changed. Buildings are altered, familiar faces gone, and his dog no longer recognizes him. The village inn now displays a portrait of General Washington instead of King George, signaling political upheaval.
