The story begins with Johnson entering a smoky bar in a rainy Venusian city, where he learns of an upcoming ritual called the Dreaming, performed by a revered Venusian named Unger. The atmosphere is thick with sensory details—rain, music, perfume—that set a mood of unease and anticipation. Johnson encounters Vee Vee, a confident and knowledgeable woman whose motives remain unclear. She attempts to paralyze him with a Venusian nerve block, but Johnson escapes, highlighting the ever-present danger beneath the surface.

The group moves to the Room of the Dreaming, where Unger performs a ritual involving trance states and visions. Johnson experiences a vivid vision of a spaceship floating in an endless void, a moment that blends wonder with mystery. Unger’s levitation during the ritual defies known laws, but the ceremony is violently interrupted by a human named Martin, who carries a forbidden recording device. Martin is skeptical of the Dreaming, accusing it of being a hypnotic trick, and his intrusion sparks a violent confrontation between humans and Venusians.

Johnson and his allies defend themselves with non-lethal weapons called zit guns, capturing Unger as a hostage to negotiate safe passage.
