The History of Caliph Vathek

The History of Caliph Vathek tells the story of a powerful and indulgent ruler, Vathek, the ninth Caliph of the Abassides, whose insatiable desires and ambition drive him beyond human limits. He begins by building five extravagant palaces, each dedicated to one of his senses, indulging in sensual pleasures of food, drink, and women. His curiosity about the stars leads him to construct a tall tower for astrology, where he encounters a mysterious Indian merchant with magical sabres inscribed with ever-changing characters. Vathek’s impatience and cruelty surface when he imprisons the Indian and burns those who fail to decipher the sabres’ inscriptions. When Vathek falls ill with a fever and unquenchable thirst, the Indian returns with a potion that cures him but demands dark sacrifices in return, including the blood of fifty beautiful boys, which Vathek deceitfully collects and offers.

As Vathek’s subjects turn against him, his mother Carathis, a cunning and wicked sorceress, calms the unrest and supports his dark ambitions. Together, they perform horrific magical rites involving mummies and venomous oils, culminating in a fiery sacrifice that produces a supernatural feast and a parchment promising vast subterranean treasures. Vathek prepares a grand expedition to seek these treasures, disregarding religious embassies and mocking sacred traditions. Along the way, he encounters Emir Fakreddin and his spirited daughter Nouronihar, whom Vathek claims as his wife despite her betrothal to Gulchenrouz, a gentle and devoted youth.

After a violent journey marked by storms and attacks from wild beasts, Nouronihar and Gulchenrouz are seemingly killed by a narcotic administered to avoid Vathek’s wrath. However, dwarfs and eunuchs revive them, and they find themselves in a strange mountain abode, caught between life and death. Vathek, recovering from illness, renounces his former faith and resolves to live as a hermit, but his mother Carathis pursues him, summoning dark spirits and confronting him about his conduct. Conflicts erupt between magical factions, and Gulchenrouz escapes with the help of a protective Genius, living in perpetual childhood innocence.

Vathek’s journey leads him and Nouronihar to the ruins of Istakar and the palace of fire, where they witness tormented souls and hear lamentations from prophetic figures. They are welcomed into the infernal empire of Eblis, encountering other condemned souls and sharing tragic stories. Carathis, undeterred by warnings, explores the subterranean domains, seizing talismans and defying infernal powers, only to face agony and torment.

The story culminates in an irrevocable divine decree condemning Vathek, Nouronihar, and others to eternal anguish, marked by rage, despair, and hatred. Vathek becomes prey to endless remorse, while innocent Gulchenrouz enjoys ages of tranquil childhood happiness. The narrative blends grotesque extravagance, dark magic, and moral reckoning, portraying the consequences of unchecked ambition, impiety, and cruelty within a richly exotic and supernatural setting.
