The White Conquerors: A Tale of Toltec and Aztec centers on Huetzin, son of the proud Toltec warrior Tlahuicol, set against the backdrop of the Aztec empire’s final days. The story opens in Tenochtitlan, where Tlahuicol, a captive warrior loyal to Tlascala, faces a grim fate at the hands of the Aztec priests, who demand human sacrifices to appease their gods. Despite offers of freedom and riches, Tlahuicol refuses to betray his people and dies heroically in combat. His son Huetzin narrowly escapes a similar sacrifice with the aid of Halco, a secret Toltec priest opposed to the Aztec religious order. This escape launches Huetzin into a perilous journey across lakes and mountains, aided by Tlascalan slaves who risk their lives to shelter him. Along the way, Huetzin learns of Hernando Cortes and the Spanish conquistadors, the so-called white conquerors, who are at war with the Aztecs and Tlascala.

Huetzin’s mission becomes one of forging an alliance between Tlascala and the Spaniards, a complex task marked by cultural clashes and internal opposition. He earns respect and command among the Tlascalan warriors and forms a brotherly bond with Sandoval, a Spanish captain who mentors him in Christian ways and swordsmanship. Huetzin’s leadership is tested in battles against Aztec forces, including a tense assault on Cholula, where he uncovers a deadly conspiracy involving human sacrifices and ambushes. The narrative portrays the Spaniards’ military tactics, the fierce valor of native warriors, and the brutal religious practices of the Aztecs, especially the priests’ fanatical grip on power.

As the story progresses, Cortes captures Montezuma, the Aztec emperor, attempting to control the city through him. Huetzin is captured and imprisoned by priests but escapes through secret passages, uncovering conspiracies against the Spaniards. The tension escalates with uprisings, battles, and the tragic death of Tiata, Huetzin’s sister, who sacrifices herself to deliver a vital message. The Spaniards endure the harrowing Noche Triste, a chaotic retreat from Tenochtitlan under heavy attack, suffering great losses. Huetzin’s courage shines as he rescues Marina, a beloved interpreter and symbol of hope, and leads the surviving forces through desperate battles.

The tide turns with a victory at Otampan and the gradual reconquest of the Aztec kingdom. Huetzin is knighted Don Juan and plays a key role in the siege of Tenochtitlan, including the destruction of Aztec idols and temples, symbolizing the collapse of the old religion. The narrative culminates in the surrender of the Aztec king Guatamotzin and the fall of the city. The conquerors begin rebuilding, erecting Christian symbols on the ruins, while Huetzin marries Marina, blending cultures amid the aftermath of conquest.
